Welcome to Buck the Stigma!

An initiative brought to you by The Jordan Elizabeth Harris Foundation.

Our organization has a long-standing history in Tarrant County of increasing awareness around mental health and training the community in suicide prevention. We believe mental health matters, anyone can be a lifesaver, and it’s time to BUCK THE STIGMA around this incredibly impactful and important topic. Only with a more open and welcoming attitude towards communication can we connect with those who need help.

If you believe mental health matters, join us in celebrating the spirit of strength and toughness that defines Texas while bucking the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide. Help us continue to foster a community where everyone knows that they're never alone, and help is always within reach.

How can you Buck the Stigma?

play on the stereotypes around both mental health and cowboys like Bill and Buck. In this unique and symbolic approach, we recognize that cowboy culture carries both the weight of stereotypes and the potential for powerful storytelling. By reclaiming these narratives, we empower ourselves to initiate real conversations about mental health, flipping the script on these stereotypes, creating a more open dialogue and greater comfort discussing the subject.

Our five short stories

Better than Dirt.

“Rub some dirt on it!” Here in the heart of Texas, we know a thing or two about strength and toughness, but we also understand that even the fiercest cowboys and cowgirls need a helping hand sometimes. Just like a snakebite requires more treatment than red dirt, thoughts of suicide require professional help. Gettin' help doesn't mean you're not tough. Bounce back, partner.

Resilience is the art of dusting yourself off after being thrown from the saddle, finding the strength to mount up again, and riding tall in the face of life’s wild stampedes. And you know that Texans have hearts as big as the Lone Star State - so when the storm clouds gather, know we’re here, ready to lend a hand and a listening ear to anyone facing a tough trail. So get up. We got you.

Stop diggin’.

"The Lone Cowboy Myth"

Bill has gotten himself in a mess of trouble and he’s all alone. But even the most rugged riders need a trusted partner or a reliable posse to back them up when the going gets tough. Similarly, when facing mental health challenges, Buck reminds us that seeking support from friends, family, or professionals is a sign of strength, not weakness. There's more help out here than you think.

You’re the cow boss on this ranch.

In the mind’s frontier, anxiety may ride in like a storm, but remember, you’re the cow boss on this ranch. Just like a trusted trail guide leads you through tough terrain, sometimes it’s wise to rope in some help for those unruly thoughts. Ain’t no shame in talkin’ to a friend, a counselor, or a professional who knows how to navigate the twists and turns of the mind. As Buck reminds us, most of the stuff we worry about never actually happens. Your negative thoughts don’t have to run the ranch.

The grass ain’t always greener.

Partner, them perfect folks might shine like polished spurs, but remember, even the proudest stallion has its quirks. Each one of us is ridin’ our own trail, facin’ our own challenges and victories. So don’t be lookin’ over the fence, ‘cause your own journey’s a tale worth tellin’, wrinkles and all. Sit up tall in your own saddle. You got this.
